The lake was formed by the construction of a dam at the Prairie du Sac which was completed in 1924. The entire area of the lake is 9500 acres and its shoreline reaches 57 miles. There are also plenty of glacial lakes in Wisconsin which are still there such as Baraboo or which have disappeared such as the Glacial Lake Wisconsin. The latter was eventually flooded by the River Wisconsin. It had formed in the last ice age, about 15.000 years ago.
